RE: modifying Dodge 1500 to pull a 5er

7000 Dry weight 5er and 1/2 ton Dodge with a tall rear gear gives it away also. Not to mention, that the pin weight is probably close to 1500 lbs +. That will put the truck over almost immediately.

RE: Pirateland

One of our all time favorite places. We went 4 times last year and have been once so far this year. The beach is great, close to the campsites on the beach front. The pool and lazy river are nice to relax in. Ice cream parlor serves Edys and is always packed at night. Try the fried oreos if you have a sweet tooth. If you have children, they will have a great time. Plenty to do in the CG and many other attractions close by. Our next trip there is planned for Labor Day weekend. Have a good time, I'm jealous, I wish I was headed there this weekend. There are golf carts, but they really stepped up security last year and have stopped underage drivers

RE: Smart Tote - Tote-n-Stor - Tote-Along - Which do you use??

I use the tote-n-store. I pull it behind the truck to the dump station. I fill it with a short garden hose that cam with it. (grey water only) and when I get to the dump station, I unhook it and hook up a 3" sewer hose and lift to dump. Pretty easy, and I got it at a great price.

RE: Reverse Polarity on Outlets

My generator does not have a GFCI outlet. It does read incorrectly when the tester is plugged in. It does correct when I ground it. I don't pound a ground rod in every time I use it. I simply drive a metal tent stake into the ground and tie a wire to it with a clamp. When I use the generator at the house, I use the ground rod that is driven into the ground for the service entrance. It works great. We were without power for well over 2 weeks about 6 years back and I ran almost the entire house off the gen. I did not have the TT then, or I would have moved into that. We still had no heat in the house (electric heat pump) and had to use propane heaters. It was a long 2 weeks.

RE: Has anyone tried one of the water to hydrogen products

This has been around forever. Do a search for "water to gas" and have a seat.... you'll be able to read for a while. It looks like a great idea, I don't know anyone that uses it.

RE: 08 F150 towing 8000lbs trailer

Is the 8000# wet or dry. If dry, no way. If wet, depending on tongue weight and his expectations he will be fine. Mine weighs in at 8500# loaded up for 15 days for 6 people. The new body F-150 is an extremely capable platform that handles weight and towing duties beautifully. Tell him to get a good brake controller and anti- sway hitch such as Reese DC or Equalizer, make sure it's set up correctly and be patient with it. He's not going to win any races but will arrive safely. Is the terrain flat or hilly? If flat, he'll be OK. It will pull grades, just not very fast. He will also be in 2nd gear. Make sure he locks out OD at all times. See sig.... Trailer is 33'-11" tip to tail.

RE: Ultra 3500 blocks tailgate - help

Just be glad you don't have the box depth of an F-150. I can't clear my jack with my tailgate unless I take the jack off completely. Even after that I think I would be pretty close to the propane tanks. It is also hard to reach into the bed of the truck without standing on the rear bumper or rear tires.

RE: Greetings from Myrtle Beach Travel Park.

:h What is a b ring rig? I am not sure I understand what your talking about. We have been at the beach with the wind blowing at a constant 25-30 MPH. It is not fun, but it is manageable. You do have a hard time keeping a grille lit though. It is going to be hot all week here in the Carolinas. It's not supposed to cool down until Thursday.

RE: torque converter lockup how to

The reason for wanting to keep it unlocked is in stock form the converter locks up and i loose 400 rpm this kills my acceleration.only wanting to keep it unlocked to merge on freeway. engine braking is already good stock. I had the same truck without lock up and it was fine.It sounds like you got a problem with your truck. I can get my TC to lock and unlock just by adjusting my right foot. Hills are not an issue. It took me a while to "learn" how to drive the truck. If you pay attention to your tach, it is pretty easy when you figure out where it locks and unlocks. You are correct about the 400 RPM difference, now you just have to learn how to make it do what you need it to with your foot. It is actually easy and no modifications are necessary.

Why would you want the TC unlocked all the time? That sounds like a recipe for a quick trans melt down from the heat generated.

RE: did i weigh right???

Labman,
Why can't you load the bikes in the truck? You have a 5.5 bed? What else is in the bed? I carry 4 full size bikes in a rack + propane + firewood. You also have another option.... you can make a rack for the top of the bed rails. This will get your weight off the back of your trailer. You still should not be getting any sway. Did you put any grease on the L brackets? Have you checked the torque on the head? Something isn't right.

RE: Reverse Polarity on Outlets

You got it. The easiest way to tell if your ground is tied to the frame is to take a continuity tester or ohm meter and touch the frame of the gen to the ground pin on the gen rec. If it lights, then it is grounded to the frame. Then you can find the ground lug (it should be a green terminal with a set screw on it) stick a short length of heavy copper ground wire into the ground and then terminate it on the lug. Start your gen. and test the rec again. It should light the way I told you. Hot to neutral and hot to ground. Then, plug in your rig and go inside and do the same thing. It should read correctly. The reading you are getting, has nothing to do with the rigs wiring. You have the correct idea. Now it's going to be time to find the ground lug and try it out. My generator does the same thing. It is not a Honda

RE: Hook up by yourself devices?

You know I have been hooking up the trailer for the past 3 years by myself and have used nothing. I just know where in the back window I should aim for and then when I think I am close I get out and check and mover accordingly. That costs nothing. Practice is all you need no fancy gizmos just a little practice and faith. Practice Zero Dollars, experience Priceless.Same here. I can actually hook up in back in better and easier than if someone is guiding me. Now, if it is a really tight location and I can't see both sides of the TT, I will not even attempt it. I have a local CG that we go to often, the sites are extremely tight in some areas. The last time we went, my son guided me in. (he's 17) We actually had a crowd gather watching me back in our 33'-11" trailer around 2 trees on opposite sides of the site. First try, dead level, and exactly where I wanted it. Needless to say, the crowd dispersed rather quickly.

RE: did i weigh right???

You would be surprised on how much your bikes are reducing your TW. Don't forget, you got that weight way at the tail, behind the axles. It acts like a lever and greatly affects your tongue weight. Is your fresh water tank in the front? If so, you might need to add more water to get your rig to calm down on the road. Your weights look good. Maybe someone else will jump in on this. I carry my bikes in the bed of the truck just because of this.

RE: Reverse Polarity on Outlets

Retired,
You answered your own question. It is not the fact that Neut and ground aren't bonded, Its the fact that the gen is not grounded. If you take a section of wire and hook it to the ground lug on the generator ans stick it in the ground you will see the mis wire condition go away.
That little plug-in circuit tester doesn't care one bit what the voltage is relative to earth ground and that is not what it is testing. The plug-in tester is simply looking to see if the neutral line is connected to the trailer's electrical ground at some point. The whole mess could be 600 volts above the earth and the little tester wouldn't know the difference.
Retired Nuke, your gen and wiring are fine. Your conclusions are correct. If you really wanted to, you could tie the neutral and ground together somewhere on the generator side of your transfer switch, but the only thing you would gain is that your plug in tester would read correctly. That's where your not entirely correct. Most gens run with a floating ground. Unless it's a sine wave converter, this could result in damage to electronics. Almost every generator made has a ground lug on it for this purpose. That little plug in tester will sense any combination of circuit fault, including, but not limited to, Open ground, open neutral, open hot, reverse polarity, hot and ground reversed, neutral and ground reversed, ect. I was a diagnostic troubleshooter for more than 12 years on home and generator circuits. Once you learn how to "read" the lights on the tester, you can also tell if you have a loose connection or nicked wire just by how bright the lights are. I can do the same thing with a stick type tester or a continuity tester. I can trace down shorts and other mind boggling electrical issues usually in less than 30 mins that would take the normal person with logical reasoning hours. I did it day in and day out. That little tester will lie to you in a heartbeat also. It will tell you that you have a reverse polarity issue or open neutral(I have seen it both ways) when in fact, you will only have an open ground. This is where the stick tester come in. Here is a quick check for you. Take your generator and plug in your TT. Take your rec tester and go in the TT and plug it in. See what the lights say. Then take your stick tester and test the rec. Touch the pin on the left (hot) to the pin on the right (neutral) you should get a light from your tester. Then take the probe out of the neutral and go to ground. If it is "open", you will have no light. Now, step 2.... go and ground your generator like I mentioned above or you can tie a ground to the neutral via a jumper wire in the rec. It will make the lights read correctly. The 2 outside lights should light orange. None of the others should be lit. We had a home that actually energized the sheet rock walls because of an open ground. You could get 50V by touching wet painted walls on 2 different circuits... IE: bathroom wall and hallway walls. It blew everyone's minds until I plugged in my little rec tester and I tested the ground. This is your electrical lesson for Friday night.:B

RE: 2008 F150 Tire pressure

They are only glorified passenger car tires. And FYI....You won't see anywhere near 60,000 out of the OEM BFG. You might get lucky and get 35,000-38,000 out of them, but thats it. I got 37,000 out of mine and I was afraid to drive in the rain when I changed them to load E Coopers.

RE: half ton towable sundance?? can i tow it?

I have a F-150 Supercrew. I would NOT even think about that trailer behind this truck! You will not like it. You will stay in second gear on the slightest inclines, Your trans will not like you at all. My truck is modified, including the tires, and I would not even think about a 5th. My trailer is 8500# loaded up ready to go on a 15 day trip with 6 people. Dry weight on the TT is 6400. It is actually only 20# heavier than the posted dry weight. This is the absolute max I would put behind this truck. I wouldn't listen to a salesman on some of these lots no matter what.

RE: gas.... how much more is it really costing you?

My recent trip to the beach on the 4th cost us $100 more than it did last year. Couple that with the price of everything else and it does hurt a bit. Does it mean that we don't go..... HECK NO. I just don't go as often. We spent 38 days last year at the beach. A total of 12 trips. This year we only made 2 to date and have 1 more planned. Thats OK. We will go somewhere closer. I am just glad that my wife and I have jobs within 8 miles of the house!
